A mother was left fearing for her daughter's life after doctors at a Worcestershire hospital misdiagnosed her with an eating disorder.
Abbie Wright, 12, suffered from a serious bowel condition that caused her to drop three stone in weight over a short period of time. However, doctors at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust misdiagnosed her with an eating disorder and after several attempts at a diagnosis, a psychologist was sent to the family home.
A spokesman for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust said:
"Abbie received tests and treatment at Worcestershire Royal Hospital over a five-week period in July and August 2012 in order to determine the cause of her medical problems. Following an examination in August 2012, the results suggested a possible diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease and Abbie was referred to Birmingham Children's Hospital for ongoing medical care."
Ms Wright, of Stourport, took matters into her own hands and went with her daughter to Birmingham Children's Hospital, where in just 48 hours, the doctors diagnosed her with Crohn's Disease. As a result of her illness, Abbie is still one year behind in her studies and her family are concerned the delay in diagnosis has caused long term physical and mental damage.
Ms Wright is planning to sue the hospital trust for compensation for her daughter's misdiagnosis.
