Misdiagnosed dad dies of heart attack

A father of three died of a heart attack just a day after an inexperienced nurse misdiagnosed his chest pains as high blood pressure.

46 year old garden centre manager, Terry Best had been suffering with chest pains while on his way to work in Derbyshire so decided to call off to his local minor injuries unit.

When he begin to experience dizziness, pins and needles and chest pains in November last year, Mr Best, a devoted dad of three decided to visit medical staff at the Whitworth Community Hospital.

To his relief, he was discharged just 25 minutes later and told to make a routine appointment with his GP to discuss his high bloody pressure.

Terry's wife, Kerry Best admitted she felt better knowing he was in safe hands at the time, "I knew Terry must have been feeling very unwell for him to take himself to hospital as he was never one to make a fuss".

Having made an appointment with his GP for the following evening, this proved too late as Terry was found slumped in his car the very next day in Buckinghamshire.

The Inquest which took place at Milton Keynes Coroners Court found that the nurse who saw Mr Best 'failed to refer him for emergency care'.

In a Mail Online report, it was noted that the emergency nurse did not have adequate experience to interpret the ECG scan despite Mr Best's blood pressure being sky high.

Since Mr Best's death, the Derbyshire NHS Trust a 'serious incident investigation' to ensure lessons were learned from the tragedy.
