Investigation Launched Into Baby's Death

A newborn baby's death is being investigated by a hospital trust, following a dispute over which department the infant should be treated at.

Paramedics took the baby to the Accident and Emergency Department at Worcestershire Royal Hospital on January 23rd.

On arrival at the hospital the baby was no longer breathing and there was a dispute amongst doctors as to where the child should be cared for. Since there was not a full paediatric resuscitation team on hand at the A&E Department, doctors wanted the baby to be sent to the maternity unit.

The discussions arose because transferring the infant to the maternity ward would have meant wheeling the young patient through the hospital, all the while performing heart massage on the newborn.

Worcestershire Acute Hospital Trust has declared the situation a major incident, and will launch an investigation into what went wrong.

A spokesman for the West Midlands Ambulance Service said, "We are aware of this very sad case which was referred to the coroner. Until the family give their permission we will not be commenting at what must be a very distressing time."

He continued, "We have a duty of care to the family and our thoughts are with them at this very difficult time."
