A report in the Solicitors Journal says that "the NHS approach to clinical negligence claims undermines the true value of human life."
The article, written by Michael Williamson, explains that if standards of performance don't improve within the NHS then the only other way of reducing claims is to lower standards...
The National Audit Office have issued a report confirming how much of the NHS budget is currently being spent on medical negligence claims. The report reveals that nearly £700 is spent by the NHS on "negligence cover" for every live birth in the UK. Last year that cost the NHS £500 million.
There are approximately 2,000 births in the UK each day. Complications occur in 1 in 1,000 births.
Staff shortages and an increased number of complications in births are proving to be costly for both the NHS and taxpayers.
The Health Service have been pointing the finger at statistics saying, "we're within quota" with the suggestion being that a certain level of mistakes are acceptable.
The Chair of the Public Committee, Margaret Hodge, said "The department needs to buck up and take responsibility for this. It needs to review its monitoring and reporting process to ensure that all relevant bodies can work effectively together to deliver maternity services that are value for money and fit for purpose."
