In the last 12 months, hospitals across the West Midlands have paid out a staggering £45 million for clinical negligence claims.
With a bill of £13.9 million, the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Good Hope, Heartlands and Solihull hospitals, paid out the highest amount, coughing up a whopping £1.5 million in legal fees for lawyers.
The Trust, which insists the figures do not reflect the quality of patient care at its' hospitals, said surgeon Ian Paterson was largely responsible for the £13.9 million sum due to the high volume of claims made against him.
Andrew Catto, Deputy Chief Executive and Executive Medical Director of the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, said:
"Whilst we regret the significant impact that the process of taking legal action can have on patients, the majority of these litigation costs account for the pro-active approach that the Trust has taken to compensate the NHS patients of Mr Ian Paterson.
"This includes increased legal costs for the Trust in defending the claims concerning private sector treatment performed by Mr Paterson."
The Trust also insisted that payouts for clinical negligence included cases from as far back as 1996, with the amount covering final settlements, staged payments and interim payments.
