Samsung Electronics' investigation into what caused some Galaxy Note 7s to catch fire has concluded that the batteries caused the devices to explode, a source has said.
The South Korean tech giant has been conducting internal tests since October, alongside a local government-backed research institute and the US Underwriters Laboratory.
Samsung is expected to announce the full results of the probe on January 23, revealing what faults led to the massive recall scandal that is thought to have cost the company $19 billion.
The firm will also announce what measures it is taking to avoid the safety failures recurring in future products.
In October Samsung stopped production of its Galaxy Note 7 handset, recalled the product from sale, and offered refunds to anyone who had purchased one, after reports emerged that handsets were apparently spontaneously catching fire.
Despite widespread criticism of the products, along with Samsung's handling of the crisis, the company has recently revealed that it will be releasing a new Galaxy model – the S8.
