Landlord Prosecuted For Fire Risk Erdington Property

A rogue landlord who failed to comply with letting regulations and who left an Erdington property at risk of fire has been prosecuted in Birmingham.

Mohammed Majid, 31, admitted failing to obtain a house of multiple occupation (HMO) licence for an eight-bedroomed home in The Drive, Erdington. He also pleaded guilty to breaching HMO management regulations which 'included those designed to protect tenants from fire.'

Faulty wiring which could potentially have sparked a house fire was also discovered at the address.

Appearing at Birmingham Magistrates' Court last Friday (December 8), Majid was fined £1,750, with £2,088.59 full costs and a victim surcharge of £35.

Majid was one of three landlords prosecuted at the court that day. Osman Baz, 35, admitted to breaching HMO regulations for an address in Selly Oak.

Baz was fined £321 with £1,628.34 costs, and a victim surcharge of £20.

A third offender, Farzana Baz admitted the same offence for a different property in Selly Oak, and was fined £450 with £1,715.17 full costs and a victim surcharge of £20.

Cabinet member for housing and homes, Cllr Peter Griffiths, said:

"These prosecutions send out a clear message – we are here to tackle rogue landlords and support and protect our citizens."
