Individuals with Low Self-Esteem Spend More Time on Facebook

Susan Greenfield argues that the Internet is undermining everything from attention spans to empathy in her new book 'Mind Change: How Digital Technologies Are Leaving Their Mark on Our Brains'.

Interestingly, she found that individuals with low self-esteem spent more time using Facebook than those with high self-esteem. Her explanation being that Facebook allows for a significant degree of "identity-airbrushing", whereby users can present an ideal version of themselves over social media.

A new survey sponsored by a group in the UK links Facebook to 33% of all divorces, up from 20% in 2009, with findings highlighting high levels of Facebook use in associated with adultery, separation and divorce.

Researchers also found that users stalking their ex-partners over social media after a breakup were adding to the problem, saying:

"Overall, these findings suggest that exposure to an ex-partner through Facebook may obstruct the process of healing and moving on from a past relationship."
