Girl Wins Right To Be Cryogenically Frozen

A 14-year-old girl who died from cancer has become the first British child to be cryogenically frozen.

The teenager, who can't be named, died last month and is now in a 'cryostat' tank at around -196C inside the Michigan-based Cryonics Institute, it can be reported for the first time today.

The High Court heard that the girl's mother had saved up the £37,000 she needed for the 'freezing of the body in perpetuity.'

But because she is a child it required the consent of both her parents. Her father, who had not seen her for 8 years, expressed concerns about the procedure, telling Mr Justice Jackson:

"Even if the treatment is successful and she is brought back to life in, let's say, 200 years, she may not find any relative and she might not remember things.

"She may be left in a desperate situation – given that she is still only 14-years-old – and will be in the United States of America."

Mr Justice Jackson agreed that the girl's mother should be the only person to make decisions about the disposal of her body.

After agreeing, the High Court judge visited the girl's bedside shortly before her death, and said she died peacefully knowing her last wish was to be carried out.
