Essential improvements to be made for family courts

Sir James Munby, the president of the Family Division, has questioned if divorces need legal guidance.

He spoke at a Legal Wales Conference in Bangor and said the changes are necessary to address, the legal aid cuts situation.

James Munby said the new child arrangement scheme, which happened in April, needs a new method of approach towards private law cases.

Munby stated, "The system must reflect the 'reality' that parties will no longer be represented and the courts will have to adjust accordingly."

The aim of the family court, Munby said, is to 'simplify and streamline' the process to make it easier and cheaper for everyone.

Munby concluded, "Reform is desperately needed and has been desperately needed for at least 40 years. Far governments have failed to act. Reform is inevitable. It is inconceivable that society will not right this injustice in due course."
