A couple who wanted to split their assets have been told their divorce, which cost £920,000 in legal fees, was a waste of time and money.
The 54 year old business man, was left with £841,500 and his 44 year old wife received around £1,120,000.
Mr Justice Mostyn analysed the case and has asked for lawyers to set a 'costs cap' to ensure they don't overcharge clients. The judge said, "'I must confess to have been almost lost for words when the scale of this madness was revealed to me."
The cost of the case started to rise when the couple spent £150,000 employing forensic accountants to value the man's "market gardening" business which had an estimated value of approximately £3m.
The judge told Daily Mirror readers that a case that was so easily settleable had turned into one where it was almost impossible to find a compromise.
Furthermore the judge supported legislation that would allow clients to demand a fixed fee price instead of being charged per an hour.
He concluded: ''In my opinion only if these two steps are taken will the grotesque leaching of costs, such as has occurred in this case, be arrested.'
