Elderly couple die within hours of each other

A devoted Manchester couple died within just 10 hours of each other after 68 years of marriage.

George and Dorothy Doughty met during the Second World War following the death of Dorothy's first husband, Victor and had never spent a day apart since.

George, 91 went to school in Somerset with Victor and they were in the same regiment, but love blossomed for the pair after George sent a letter of commiseration to Victor's widow, Dorothy.

Their first meeting was at Manchester's Piccadilly Railway Station where George was carrying a newspaper and Dorothy held a rose.

Sharing the same wedding anniversary as the Queen, the loving couple were even invited to the Golden Wedding Anniversary celebrations at Buckingham Palace in 1997.

Following a very happy life together, George and 92 year old Dorothy incredibly both passed away at Tameside Hospital just 10 hours apart.  George was already in hospital being treated for Pneumonia and was in intensive care when his wife was admitted suffering complications from Shingles.

When Dorothy died suddenly from an infection at 2.30pm on 1^st June, Mr Doughty was blissfully unaware and he himself passed away at 12.30am later that evening. 

Family of the couple say that although their deaths came as a shock, at least they didn't have the stress of knowing each other had passed.

The touching funeral took place in Ashton-Under-Lyne with their coffins laid side by side, a newspaper and a rose sitting aloft each.
