Personal, hand written Wills of thousands of soldiers killed in WWI, previously only available on request, are being made available online after having been unseen for a century.
The letters, which are public records, had never been released to the beneficiaries because they belonged to the then War Office and the Government.
Months have been spent scanning the letters in to computers. Helen Grant, MP, said: "This fascinating project has opened the door to a whole new insight on our war heroes."
Pte Joseph Witchburn of 2nd Bn The Durham Light Infantry Wrote on August 10th 1914 to his mother: "I dare say this will be the last letter you will receive from me until the war is over, as I am prepared to move to the front at any moment.'' Witchburn was thought to have died on September 14th 1914.
For the first time, these personal Wills are now available for the soldier's families and historians to view. Some Wills include personal letters to loved ones. the public can now build a personal picture of the men who fought for our country.
