A tragic incident unfolded when Stephen Owusu, aged 22, confessed to causing the death of his housemate during a disturbance within their residence.
The unfortunate event occurred at a property located on Beverly Road in Fallowfield, where Owusu fatally harmed 42-year-old Thomas Murphy.
Initially, Owusu was set to face trial at Manchester Crown Court the following week on a charge of murder. However, he altered his plea, acknowledging guilt for manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. This significant development took place during a hearing held at the same court on a Wednesday morning.
Prosecutors deemed Owusu's guilty plea acceptable in light of comprehensive assessments of his mental health. They decided not to pursue a murder trial. The incident in question, in which Owusu took the life of Mr. Murphy, originally from Ireland, transpired on September 24th of the preceding year.
The authorities received a distress call and promptly arrived at the scene at approximately 6:40 pm. However, specific details surrounding the circumstances leading to the tragic event have not yet been disclosed.
In response to the situation, a judge scheduled Owusu's sentencing hearing for October. Addressing the defendant, Judge John Potter stated, "Stephen Owusu, you have pleaded guilty to the offence of unlawful killing, an extremely serious offence."
