Baroness Shackleton of Belgravia has warned that, 'No-fault divorce' will be more painful for married couples as it fails to tackle the torture of splitting finances. The Conservative solicitor made the comments before the biggest shake up of divorce laws in half a century.
The Baroness has represented members of the Royal family including the Prince of Wales and celebrities like Sir Paul McCartney. In England and Wales, The Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act enables married couples to start legal proceedings without blame for the breakdown of their marriage
.
Lady Shackleton told BBC Radio 4, "What this act doesn't do is sort out the money and most of the torture in sorting out the finances. It is a big improvement, but it's not a panacea for a speedy, painless divorce."
Under the new law, there will be minimum of 20 weeks for 'meaningful' reflection between applying for a conditional order and starting proceedings.
