When Steve and Clare O'Connor bought a tiny cottage in Cheshire more than five years ago, their dreams of owning a sprawling estate on the same idyllic spot came true before their very eyes.

The successful property developer and his wife battled planning restrictions imposed on the traditional two storey cottage to create a family home spanning 16,000sq ft.

Working closely with an architect, the couple decided to carve their home into the Cheshire Cliffside and beat the planners by creating the space for five bedrooms and ten bathrooms by building a network of underground caves.

Recently back on the market for an astonishing £4.75 million, the O'Connors together with their two sons have their very own Helipad perched aloft the property and commute to London in just an hour.

Creating such a unique transformation has been a labour of love for Steve and Clare O'Connor who have strived to make their home as light and airy as possible considering that most of it is below ground.

Mr O'Connor spoke in a Daily Mail report, "It is essentially a modern day country home in size, but if you took out our indulgence, the swimming pool, it would have the same energy costs as a three bed semi".

Converted from a cottage in need of modernisation to a large complex complete with football pitch and swimming pool, the current owners control the temperature of their futuristic home with the use of a unique air tower.
