An award winning lollipop man who had been crossing the children of Kentish Town safely for 20 years has been sacked for gross misconduct following alleged racist remarks
46 years old Jon Seymour has been asked to hand in his lollipop pole and uniform to Camden Council following the row which took place in the Town Hall.
Mr Seymour claims he has never had any complaints about his behaviour before as he has been manning the crossing patrol outside Carlton Primary School.
When he stepped into Camden Town Hall to try and get a refund from a parking meter which had swallowed £4 of his change, an unnamed official asked him to lower his voice. According to a report in the Daily Mail, Mr Seymour was alleged to have used aggressive language towards the council employee.
Using the words 'King Kong' and 'Monkey', Mr Seymour denies using racist terms and will be appealing his dismissal. Explaining the incident, Mr Seymour added, "My mum is black, I'm black. It is not being racist. It was nothing to do with his colour. No one looks like King Kong".
Mr Seymour was escorted from the Town Hall by security staff and a council report reveals that Mr Seymour's behaviour was caught on CCTV. Camden Council spokesman Steve Shawcross said that the row could have been a 'potentially physical altercation' and 'aggressive in nature'.
Although Mr Seymour has himself spent 20 years working for the council without a single warning, a statement issued by them is clear, "Camden has a code of conduct which sets out how staff are expected to behave towards the public and other members of staff".
