Altrincham Property Market Hits Record Levels

The scramble for housing in Altrincham and Hale has reached feverish levels as the property market booms.

Demand for property has never been higher; meaning the average price of a home on many roads has risen to well over £1 million.

For decades the market in the local area has been underpinned by parents trying to get their child into the best school. Regularly among the best in the country, places at Loreto, Ambrose, and both Altrincham boys' and girls' schools are highly sought after.

This has given the area a premium price bracket which outstrips nearly all others, with the average house price in Altrincham currently at £469,497, more than double the average for Greater Manchester.

Stuart Howe, branch manager at Thornley Groves in Hale, said:

"One of the things we find is that because of the strength of the schools, both primaries and secondaries, we get a lot of people coming who have lived in WA14 or 15 for years and who want to stay in the area.

"People get used to living close to Hale village and Altrincham town centre and though they know moving five miles further out will get them a bigger house and a bigger garden, they would rather beg, borrow or steal to stay put."
