According to new research compiled by the property group Savills, Altrincham is home to two of the five most expensive villages in the UK.
Bowdon and Hale, in the Altrincham area of Greater Manchester, ranked fourth and fifth in an analysis of villages with the highest number of home sales over £1 million in 2013/2014. Both villages sold 27 homes each worth £1 million or more during this period.
Associate director at Savills' Wilmslow branch, Andrew Thorpe, said:
"Bowdon and Hale now have some of the most expensive houses outside of London. The big thing about Altrincham generally is that it's amenities-driven. It's got some of the best private and state schools in the area, plus it's so close to the city centre and major transport links.
"I was speaking to someone the other day who has recently relocated from Cambridge to Hale. When I asked why, he simply said 'the schools'. He knew he was paying a premium for the house but he wanted the schooling - it was as simple as that."
Bowdon is home to two outstanding grammar schools - Altrincham Grammar School for Boys and Altrincham Grammar School for Girls - and is also located in the 'footballer-belt'.
