Neil Armstrong's estate has been paid almost £5million in a settlement for allegations that post-surgical complications led to the astronaut's "wrongful death" in 2012.
Armstrong died on 25th August 2012 at Mercy Health, Fairfield hospital, after being admitted for vascular bypass surgery.
After his death, his family released a tribute to the astronaut's millions of fans and admirers. "Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty… the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."
However, behind the scenes, his sons Mark and Rick, argued that the care provided at the hospital led to his "wrongful death" and cost their father his life. "He underwent the cardiovascular surgery but post-surgical complications arose and he subsequently died," the motion stated.
The hospital stood by their treatment and defended the care that Armstrong received. Two years later, they provided a motion to seal the settlement adding: "The hospital … agreed to a confidential settlement of $6 million to avoid the publicity the Estate might have initiated on behalf of certain members of the family if settlement had not been reached."
A hospital spokesperson said: "The public nature of these details is very disappointing both for our ministry and the patient's family, who had wished to keep this legal matter private."
The estate of Neil Armstrong was compensated almost £5million ($6million) which was distributed to ten family members including his children, grandchildren and siblings. Most of the settlement, ($5.2 million) was split between Armstrong's sons, Mark and Rick.
Carol, Armstrong's widow, did not receive any money in her role as executor but signed off on the settlement.
The secret dispute was never reported, however it comes to light as the world celebrates the 50th anniversary of Mr Armstrong's first steps on the moon. Documents filed with the Hamilton County Probate Court in Cincinnati were made publicly available earlier this week.
