Teen Apprentice Dies After Becoming Caught in Machinery

A teenage boy has died after becoming caught up in a piece of machinery whilst working at an engineering firm in Greater Manchester.

Cameron Minshull, 16, was working as an apprentice at Huntley Mount Engineering in Bury, Greater Manchester when his life was tragically cut short after he became entangled in an unguarded lathe. The firm, which makes products for the petrochemical industry, hired Cameron after recruitment agency Lime People Training Solicitors Ltd (LPTS) organised his apprenticeship.

LPTS has now gone on trial following the death of Cameron on the 8th January, 2013, accused of failing to ensure his health and safety. Prosecutors have also accused the company, which has admitted to corporate manslaughter, of using apprentices as 'cheap labour', failing to offer proper training and creating a 'grossly unsafe' system of work.

According to a former employee at the recruitment company, the apprenticeship was rushed through by LPTS so they could claim a £4,500 government payment through the Skills Training Agency for placing him at the company.
