A van driver has been cleared of causing the death of a young schoolgirl after a week-long trial at a Crown Court in Manchester.
Peter Scott, 58, who had been driving for 40 years without ever being involved in an accident, was charged with death by careless driving after causing the death of Annalise Holt, 12, at a zebra crossing on Milnrow Road, Shaw on 17th December, 2013.
Charles Brown, prosecuting, said:
"Mr Scott did not even see the girls, let alone brake before the impact. The prosecution says it is a driver's duty to keep a look-out, particularly approaching a zebra crossing. By failing to keep a careful look out and his failure to see these girls, his driving fell short of the standards expected of a careful and competent driver.
By the time emergency services arrived, Miss Holt had died from crush injuries that had prevented her from breathing after becoming stuck under the vehicle. Mr Scott, who pleaded not guilty to the offence of death by careless driving, said he couldn't explain how the accident had happened.
