A young man has died after suffering an electric shock during a routine inspection at a trading estate in Rochdale.
Nathan Brown, 19, of Tonacliffe Road, Whitworth, was working as an apprentice electrician alongside his father when he received the fatal shock. Nathan was carrying out an electrical inspection at Eurofabs, a manufacturer of sheet metal on the Shawclough Trading Estate in Rochdale.
An inquest into Nathan's death revealed he had been attempting to access the roof lighting of a storage unit by climbing onto the gantry walkway of an overhead crane. An exposed electricity conductor, known as a 'busbar', was believed to be responsible for Nathan's death after he received an electric shock.
David Brown, father of Nathan and electrician of more than 32 years, said:
"That was the worst and fastest day of my life.
"I'm completely devastated by the accident and life will never be the same again. He was the light of my life and my family and I will miss him so much."
A post-mortem examination revealed a severe electrical burn on his upper left arm but confirmed that he did not suffer any major injuries from the fall. Dr Philip Lumb, the case's forensic pathologist, suggested he had suffered a cardiac arrest and fallen whilst unconscious.
