There have been chaotic scenes at Manchester Airport as UK Border Force staff struggled to process the hundreds of passengers arriving at terminal 2.
Passengers have been left frustrated at the "horrendous" queues at passport control for the second time in less than a week.
Scores of travellers took to social media to report long delays, and claiming UK Border Force staff were struggling to cope. One passenger said almost 500 people were forced to wait at immigration at terminal two, while another traveller put the figure at "up to 3000" people.
Passengers reported seven flights landing in quick succession which led to the long queues, but airport officials and UK Border Force have yet to explain the delays.
In a veiled criticism of UK Border Force chiefs, Manchester Airport issued a statement claiming the delays were not its fault. A spokesman said:
"Ensuring a safe and efficient end to end journey for our customers is of paramount importance to us at Manchester Airport, including those elements provided by third party responsible organisations such as UK Border Force.
"Having had a successful track record, we are therefore disappointed with recent instances where our customers have experienced delays in immigration on arrival to the UK.
"We have raised our concerns with the UK Border Force and continue to work with them to ensure they provide sufficient resources to meet scheduled customer demand."
