A man has crashed a bus into a building after stealing it from a depot in Ashton-under-Lyne in the early hours of a Saturday morning.
The thief, who managed to escape from the scene of the crash, stole a double-decker bus from an Ashton-under-Lyne depot and took it on a four-mile joyride before crashing it into a building on Clegg Street in Droylsden. An eyewitness called the police shortly after 1am.
Ben Higginson, an eyewitness who was nearly hit by the bus before it crashed, said:
"I was stood on the pavement at Droylsden police station walking towards the shop where it happened. It passed us at that point doing high speed but very close to the pavement and was inches from knocking me off the pavement. We then noticed it had veered off a little further down and realised what had happened.
"We didn't see anybody flee from the bus, but I checked nobody was injured and then left the bus. Another bus driver had witnessed the crash, pulled over to report it to Stagecoach on the radio and contacted police to say it had been stolen."
Despite no reported injuries or passengers on the bus at the time of the incident, Greater Manchester Police say enquiries are on-going and that no arrests have been made.
