A large part of Stockport College has been sold to the government to make way for 350 homes.
The Homes and Community Agency (HCA) paid £7.5m for a large proportion of the Wellington Road South site, and has drawn up plans for a 'landmark' residential development of up to 350 properties.
The vacant former St Thomas's Hospital – part of the Wellington Road site – will be turned into housing, while other parts of the campus will remain in use by students, as the HCA gives the college time to relocate.
Stockport College is set to build a new secondary campus in the town centre with the help of the council, although the location has not yet been revealed.
Principal and chief executive of Stockport College, Simon Andrews, said:
"We are delighted to be working with the HCA and council to support the regeneration of the town centre and creation of more housing in the borough. This sale transforms the financial fortunes of the college and will allow for a level of investment in our learners, staff, and facilities that has not been seen for a decade."
Stockport council chief executive Eamonn Boylan said the 'landmark' housing development, as well as the new campus, both helped contribute toward the town's redevelopment.
